When I was a child, my mom was not a supporter of consumerism or materialism. She did not believe in buying name brands or staying up to date with the latest fad. For example, to her ‘sneakers’ (as she called gym/tennis shoes, she’s from New Jersey) were all the same whether they had a Nike logo on them or not. She was a major proponent of my sister and I making crafts for toys and coming up with creative games to keep us occupied. On Christmas mornings, before we opened any of the gifts under the tree, as a way for us to remember the reason for the season, we had to open the gift that ‘Jesus’ gave us first. That gift was simply a scripture that was selected for my sister and I to focus on for the upcoming year attached to a red rose.

I was directed, while working in district-wide administration for Chicago Public Schools (the third largest school district in the United States) and under the leadership of Barbara Byrd- Bennett (or Triple B as she was sometimes called), to ‘keep Barbara Byrd-Bennett out of the media.’ The directive came as a result of some negative attention towards a resource that was included in the district-wide Chicago Public Schools Social Science framework. I was a member of the team that developed the framework, and quite possibly, the person responsible for including a “controversial” resource. The resource was Marjane Satrapi’s graphic novel, Persepolis. I am an enthusiast of comics and graphic novels and have, for many years, supported untraditional resources (i.e. such as comics) as a means to engage students’ interest in topics and support literacy skills development.
Have you ever watched a good television program, and after the credits have rolled up your television screen, there are a few clips that show the ‘bloopers’ or ‘behind the scenes’ recordings? On the occasions when this has happened to me, I can honestly say that I have enjoyed a brief glimpse of what was not intended to be viewed by the public equally as much as the final edited program. Perhaps, it is the fact that the ‘bloopers’ or the ‘behind the scenes’ shots show the program in its organic state. Or, maybe, the unedited footage provides an example of how mistakes were necessary to create such an enjoyable viewing experience.
